Which states have the most detached houses?

Detached single-family houses are the homes most EDDM mailers target: one household per mailbox, and usually an owner who buys lawn care, roofing, remodeling and home services. Share of all housing units that are detached houses:

  1. Idaho: 74%
  2. Oklahoma: 73%
  3. Indiana: 73%
  4. Iowa: 72%
  5. Michigan: 72%

Lowest share:

  1. District of Columbia: 11%
  2. New York: 41%
  3. Massachusetts: 51%
  4. Maryland: 51%
  5. New Jersey: 53%

EDDM delivers to every address on a carrier route, apartments included. In a state with fewer detached houses, choose routes by their residential counts on the USPS EDDM map instead of mailing a whole ZIP code.

How we calculated it

  1. Households and housing. U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates 2020-2024: households (table B11001), housing units and 1-unit detached units (B25024), owner-occupied units (B25003). Retrieved October 27, 2026.
  2. Printing. Our current prices for 16pt postcards with UV coating, full color both sides. Every quantity is sold buy-one-get-one, so 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 pieces are the quantities received. The page reads the prices from the same price list as our cart, so it updates when prices change.
  3. Shipping. UPS Ground from the nearest of our six U.S. print hubs to one representative ZIP code in each state, priced by weight through the same shipping engine as checkout.
  4. Postage. The USPS EDDM Retail price of $0.260 per piece, from USPS Notice 123, for flats up to 3.3 ounces.
  5. Every household. Households ÷ 10,000, rounded up, gives the print runs; each run is priced and shipped to the state's representative ZIP code, and postage is added for every household.

What this study does not measure

  • Response rates. We price the mailing, not the result. Track calls and orders from your own mailings to know what one is worth to you.
  • Carrier route counts. Census households are not the same as USPS delivery points. A route's count on the EDDM map includes vacant addresses and, if you choose them, businesses.
  • Design, taxes and drop-off. Design fees, sales tax and the trip to the post office are left out. EDDM Retail also limits a mailing to 5,000 pieces per post office per day, so a 10,000-piece mailing takes two days or two post offices.
  • Other printers' prices. Printing and shipping are our prices only. Postage is the same wherever you print.
  • Survey error. ACS figures are estimates with margins of error, averaged over five years.

EDDM cost: questions and answers

How much does EDDM cost per household?

About 40.5¢ per household all-in for 5,000 6″ × 11″ postcards: $579 printing, $144.75 shipping and $1,300 postage, $2,023.75 in total. Across the sizes and quantities we priced, the range is 35.4¢ to 54.5¢ per household.

What is the EDDM postage rate per piece?

The USPS EDDM Retail price is $0.260 per piece for flats up to 3.3 ounces (USPS Notice 123). You pay it at the post office when you drop off the bundles.

Is postage or printing the bigger cost of an EDDM mailing?

Postage. It is 48% to 74% of the total at every size and quantity we priced, and its share grows with the size of the mailing because printing gets cheaper per piece while postage does not.

How much would it cost to send a postcard to every home in the U.S.?

About $49.0 million for one 6″ × 11″ EDDM postcard to each of the 129.2 million U.S. households, most of it postage. The state table above gives the figure for every state.
