Print-Ready Artwork Checklist: Bleed, Safe Zone and Resolution
A print-ready file has 0.125″ bleed on every side, keeps all text at least 0.125″ inside the trim line, uses images at 300 dpi at the printed size, is set up in CMYK color, and is saved as a high-resolution PDF with fonts embedded. Getting these right avoids white edges, cut-off text and blurry photos.
1. Bleed: extend the background past the edge
Printing presses cannot print exactly to the edge of a card, so cards are printed slightly larger and trimmed. Any color or photo that touches the edge must extend 0.125″ beyond it. A 6″ × 11″ postcard file with bleed is 6.25″ × 11.25″. Without bleed, a thin white line can appear along an edge after trimming.
2. Safe zone: keep text away from the edge
Trimming can move slightly, so keep all text, logos and phone numbers at least 0.125″ inside the finished edge. More space looks better and is easier to read.
3. Resolution: 300 dpi at the printed size
Photos taken from websites are usually 72 dpi and print blurry. Use original photos or images at 300 dpi at the size they will be printed. Stretching a small image larger lowers its resolution.
4. Color: CMYK, and rich black for large areas
Screens show RGB color; presses print CMYK. Bright screen blues and greens can look duller in print, so convert your file to CMYK and check it. For small text, use plain black. Very thin lines and small text in light colors can be hard to read.
5. Fonts and file format
- Save as a high-resolution PDF (PDF/X if your software offers it)
- Embed fonts, or convert text to outlines
- One file per side, or a two-page PDF: front, then back
- Check spelling, phone number, address and prices one last time. We print exactly what you approve.
6. For EDDM mailers: leave room for the mailing panel
EDDM Retail pieces need the postal indicia and a "Local Postal Customer" line, usually in the top right of the address side. Leave that area clear of busy backgrounds. Make sure the size qualifies first with the EDDM size checker.
7. Door hangers and folded pieces
Door hangers have a die-cut hole and slit at the top: keep text and important images away from it. For bifold and trifold menus, keep text away from the folds and check which panel is the front cover when folded.
