Reach every roof in the storm path

After a hail or wind event, homeowners call the first roofer they trust. Door hangers on the affected streets and EDDM postcards to the surrounding routes put your name in front of them before the out-of-town crews arrive.

What roofing contractors are up against

  • Moving fast after storms
  • Standing out from storm chasers
  • Turning one job into the whole street
A campaign you can copy

Put a yard sign at every job, then hang door hangers on the 40 houses around it the same week: "We just replaced your neighbor's roof. Free inspection." Back it up with a Silver EDDM postcard to the full route.

What makes a homeowner call a roofer

Roofing customers mostly come from two moments: a storm that damages roofs across a neighborhood, and an aging roof the owner has been putting off. Printed marketing works in both, but it has to look local and established, because homeowners after a storm are wary of crews they have never seen before.

A hail or wind event brings door knockers and flyers from companies all over. The roofer who wins is often the one whose sign has stood on that street before, whose door hanger names a nearby job, and whose card shows a local phone number and address.

The slower moment matters just as much. An owner who has watched three neighbors replace their roofs this year is already halfway to calling, and a card in the mailbox that week finishes the decision.

A roofer's print kit, piece by piece

Every roofing job is advertising for the next one. Here is the kit that makes it work:

  • A yard sign in the front lawn for the length of the job and a week after. Our 24″ × 18″ signs are printed on both sides on 4mm Coroplast with H-wire stakes included, so they read from both directions of traffic. 20 cost $300.
  • A 4.25″ × 11″ door hanger on the surrounding houses: "We are replacing the roof at your neighbor's home this week. Ask about a free inspection." It needs no postage and lands while the crew is visible. 5,000 cost $659.
  • A Silver EDDM package (a 6.5″ × 9″ postcard) mailed to the full carrier routes around a cluster of jobs or a storm-hit area, reaching every address without a mailing list. 5,000 cost $579.

A large job or a showroom can add a vinyl banner, which we print at $5 per square foot with a second banner free.

Moving fast after a storm

Speed matters after a storm, but so does looking settled. Order a stock of door hangers and yard signs before storm season, with a design that only needs the date and area added, so you are not waiting on printing while other crews are already on the street.

After the event, hang door hangers on the affected streets first, then mail the surrounding carrier routes. Call 512-573-1977 to confirm current print turnaround when you plan this, since it changes with demand.

Our guide to storm-response marketing for roofers covers the first two weeks after an event step by step.

Standing apart from storm chasers on paper

Print what an out-of-town crew cannot: your local street address, how many years you have worked in the area, and your license number where your state requires one. A photo of a finished roof in the same neighborhood is stronger than any slogan.

Keep claims about insurance factual. You can offer a free inspection and explain that you work with homeowners through the claim process, but do not promise approval or coverage, which only the insurer decides. Check whether your city requires a solicitation permit before crews hang door hangers.

Where to mail when there is no storm

Many roofs are replaced simply because of age, and homes built in the same years reach that point together. Neighborhoods around your recent replacements are the best place to mail between storms, because the homes nearby are likely at the same stage.

Mail those carrier routes on a steady schedule with an inspection offer, and use the jobs you finished there as proof on the card. A homeowner who recognizes the street in your photo trusts the card more than any slogan.

Repairs, gutters and the jobs between replacements

Not every homeowner is ready for a new roof, but many have a leak, missing shingles or gutters that overflow. A card that lists repairs and gutter work alongside replacement gives those people a reason to call now, and a repair customer is often the replacement customer a few years later.

Pricing a storm-season kit

A storm-season stock for a small roofing company: 5,000 4.25″ × 11″ door hangers ($659), 20 yard signs ($300) and 5,000 Silver EDDM postcards ($579). The printing total is $1,538 before shipping.

If you want us to design the door hanger and sign, design is $89 for each. Use the EDDM cost calculator for shipping and postage on the routes you mail, and the break-even calculator with your profit on an average roof to see how few jobs cover the kit.

Roofing Contractors: direct mail questions

Should roofers use door hangers or postcards after a storm?

Use door hangers first on the affected streets, since they need no postage and arrive while your crews are visible. Then mail EDDM postcards to the surrounding carrier routes to reach every address.

How much do roofing yard signs cost?

Our 24″ × 18″ yard signs on 4mm Coroplast, printed on both sides with H-wire stakes included, cost $150 for 10 and $300 for 20.

Can a roofing door hanger mention insurance claims?

It can offer a free inspection and say you help homeowners through the claim process. It should not promise that a claim will be approved, because only the insurer decides that.
