Direct Mail Design Guide

  • Home
  • Guide

Great direct mail design does one job: get the reader to act in the two seconds it takes to walk from the mailbox to the recycling bin. That means a clear hierarchy, a single obvious message, and a call to action that cannot be missed.

This guide covers layout, print-ready file setup, color and type, and the design details that separate mail that converts from mail that gets tossed.

Layout and Visual Hierarchy

Design around one dominant headline and one focal image. Everything else — supporting copy, offer, contact details — should be clearly secondary. Guide the eye from headline, to offer, to call to action in a natural path. White space is not wasted space; it makes the key message easier to absorb.

Bleed, Trim, and Safe Margins

Set up files with a 0.125" bleed on every edge so background colors run to the edge after trimming. Keep all important text and logos inside a safe margin (about 0.125–0.25" from the trim line) so nothing critical gets cut. Design at 300 DPI in CMYK for sharp, accurate print.

Color and Typography

  • Use high contrast between text and background for instant readability.
  • Limit fonts to one or two families; use size and weight for hierarchy.
  • Keep body text at least 8–10pt so it is legible at arm's length.
  • Design in CMYK, not RGB, so on-screen colors match the printed result.

Call to Action and Compliance

Make the call to action large and unmistakable — phone number, website, or QR code. Include your offer and any deadline near the CTA. For EDDM pieces, leave room for the required indicia and address block, and confirm the size meets USPS EDDM specifications before printing.

Print-Ready File Checklist

  • 300 DPI, CMYK color mode
  • 0.125" bleed on all sides
  • Text and logos inside the safe margin
  • Fonts outlined or embedded
  • Supplied as a high-resolution print-ready PDF

Frequently Asked Questions

What is bleed and why does it matter?

Bleed is extra artwork (0.125 inch) extended past the trim line so background colors reach the edge after cutting. Without it, small shifts during trimming can leave thin white slivers along the edges.

What resolution should direct mail artwork be?

Design at 300 DPI in CMYK color. Lower resolution prints blurry, and RGB files can shift color when converted for print.

Where should I place text on a mail piece?

Keep all important text and logos inside the safe margin, about 0.125 to 0.25 inch from the trim edge, so nothing critical is cut off during trimming.
